Stages of Mesothelioma

An aggressive form of cancer affecting the lining of the body’s internal organs, mesothelioma can be categorized in four stages.  According to the National Cancer Institute, the stages of malignant mesothelioma are as follows:

  • Removing Materials Containing AsbestosStage I – Malignant mesothelioma is found in the chest wall lining and may also be found in the lining of the lung, the lining of the diaphragm, or the lining of the pericardium, the sac that covers the heart, on the same side of the chest.
  • Stage II – Malignant mesothelioma is found in the lymph nodes on the same side of the chest wall as the cancer found in stage I.
  • Stage III – The mesothelioma has spread to the chest wall, the area between the lungs, the heart, the peritoneum (mesothelium of the abdomen), beyond the diaphragm or the lymph nodes on the other side or outside of the chest.
  • Stage IV – The mesothelioma has spread to distant organs or tissues.

Symptoms of Mesothelioma

Primary symptoms for pleural mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the lungs and chest cavity, are shortness of breath (dyspnea), fluid buildup between linings of the lungs and chest (pleural effusion), and chest pain.  The main symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the abdomen, are weight loss, abdominal pain or swelling, bowel obstruction, anemia, and fever.

Treatment of Mesothelioma

While there is no cure for mesothelioma, there are treatments that can affect a patient’s quality of life if the cancer is detected early enough. These include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Unfortunately, most mesothelioma victims are not diagnosed soon enough to benefit from advanced treatments and are given less than a year to live.  In this case, palliative care is available to manage pain and minimize symptoms while not treating the cancer itself.
